ADVENT IN BYZANTIUM
Saint Ephrem Men's Choir
Artistic director: Tamás Bubnó
Perhaps many do not know that according to the liturgical order of Byzantine churches, the preparation for Christmas - in the widespread Latin name Advent - is not four weeks, but six weeks long. So the Adventist fast of the Eastern Church begins tonight and ends on December 24th. Over the past centuries, there has been a proliferation of wonderful liturgical and paraliturgic songs (chants) that serve the purpose of fasting - the strengthening of the soul over the demands of the body. It is from these Christmas songs that the Saint Ephrem Men's Choir selected tonight's program, which ranges from ancient Holy Land and Greek-Byzantine hymns, through the great Russian classics, to the rich religious folklore of the Carpathian region.
