György Ferenczy was a significant figure of 20th century Hungarian culture. He was a pianist who had received musical training from Ferenc Liszt's student István Thomán, as well as Ernő Dohnányi and Leo Weiner and passed them on to outstanding artists. From 1920, he regularly performed in almost every country and major city in Europe. From 1947, he was a teacher at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and from 1958 he was head of the department. Among other things, he rediscovered György Cziffra and set him (a bar pianist at the time) on course to world-wide fame. His students have continued to spread music culture based on the Liszt tradition in Hungary and in many countries around the world. His memoire Pianoforte was published in 1989 under the care of Zoltán Kocsis.

The György Ferenczy Foundation was founded by one of his last, Polish-born students Izabella Havasiné Darska to support young talents and to organize courses based on György Ferenczy's music teaching methods.
