Mendelssohn: String Quartet in A minor, Op. 13/2
Goldmark: Piano Five in D major, Op. 54

What is one of the first compositions by Mendelssohn like? And the last completed work by Goldmark?

The story of the two masterpieces featured in our program is linked in countless ways.

String quartets undoubtedly form the backbone of Mendelssohn's chamber music oeuvre: the genre appears in every one of his creative periods, from the age of thirteen to its death (one of his last works is the op. 80 in F minor). Mendelssohn is a worthy heir to the string quartet genre which started with Haydn and continued with Mozart and Beethoven, developed to the extreme. The op. 13 string quartet in A-minor, written by Mendelssohn at age 17 shows remarkable maturity.

According to Brockhaus-Riemann's musical lexicon Károly Goldmark "...in addition to the influences of contemporary masters, he has a uniquely individual Oriental lyric with high and floating violin melodies and soft and colorful (...) harmonies." As one of the most prominent Hungarian composers of the era, he often employed Hungarian styles, for example, the verbunkos, especially in his chamber works, but in his art that he melded everything he found to be compatible with it. His last completed work is his Op. 54 piano quintet, which, according to musicologists, bears Mendelssohn's influence. But we will allow you to be the judge.

During the concert, we remember poet Endre Ady who passed away a hundred years ago.
