Beethoven: Symphony in C major, Op. 21
Prokofiev: D-major "Classic" Symphony, Op. 25
During the Viennese classicism the symphony was perfected by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, which meant that later romantic composers faced higher standards. This respect is also evident in the 20th century. Debussy writes of the classical era "with the least to tell the most," and Prokofiev frames the new harmonies and melodies with classical elements of form, saluting the greatness of his predecessors.
