BLACK AND WHITE

Emese Mali

Introductory speech by Milán Bolla

Works by Chopin, Debussy and Hummel

In 1836, a German carpenter and piano maker Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg created his first piano in the kitchen of his home in Seesen.

In the May of 1850, following a thirty-day trip, he arrived in America with his wife and seven children. Three years later, he changed his name to Henry E. Steinway and together with his sons founded the piano factory whose instruments are nowadays used by world-class artists, and one of them has graced stage of Óbudai Társaskör since November last year.

Our performing artists always enjoy playing this Steinway D-model piano. In our new series, we have asked five artists to play on the black and white keys.

With the help of Ilona Prunyi, Emese Mali, Ádám Balogh, Tamás Érdi and Zoltán Fejérvári we pay tribute to the 165-year-old Steinway factory. The title of the series refers to the keys of the piano as well as to the title of one of Debussy's last works.

The artist of the second concert, Emese Mali, plays as a sought-after soloist at major music festivals in Hungary and abroad. She has performed two concerts in the United States, in Los Angeles and in San Francisco. She also taught a master course at the San Francisco Conservatory. Since 2009 she has been teaching at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music.
