Lenny!
Threescore years and ten, Leonard Bernstein quoted the Scripture in reference to human life span. Fivescore years after his birth Bernstein is more alive than ever.
We still do not know exactly what he was. Composer? Conductor? Teacher? Media star? Thinker? All of these combined. Modern age Leonardo, or Leonard, perhaps not by accident. Although I prefer Lenny. A friend to all of us and yet an inscrutably versatile musician. Perhaps it is worthwhile to at least become familiar with, if not understand, his work. Primarily his music, from the West Side Story to his symphonic works. And then, through his music, his personality, which we now know extends beyond the 20th century. Lenny lived, Lenny lives, and if we have any say in the matter, he will continue to live.
