The music of the late Middle Ages, King Matthias' court, and the Renaissance courtyards of Europe fostered the creation of countless previously unknown instruments. In addition to the lute, whistles, virginals and viola da gambas, came the creation of special instruments such as the organistrum, clavicembalo, various fiddles and rebecs, big krummhorns, gemshorns and other special wind instruments. Even learned musicians know only a few musical instruments from the Baroque era, although the 17th and 18th centuries abound in amazing instruments. The Mandel Ensemble will play the magnificent Baroque lute and the long-necked theorba, two of the most beloved instruments of the French, Italian and Spanish courts. The most striking era was the 18th and 19th centuries when famous composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, then Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, or Giuseppe Verdi helped the birth of now completely forgotten instruments. The members of the band will also play such remarkable instruments as the serpent, the ophicleide and the jaw harp with tireless past-saving zeal and authenticity.
