The oldest symphonic ensemble in Hungary, the Budapest Philharmonic Society orchestra was founded by Ferenc Erkel in 1853, following a Viennese example.

Its history is unique: numerous music history events and a long line of influential musicians and performers result in a rich history that makes the group one of the most important European bands. The foundations of Hungarian symphonic concert life were laid down by the group, the first in Europe to introduce passes. For nearly 100 years as the only professional symphonic band they had the responsibility of following the developments of European music literature and integrating Hungarian music culture into the world's leading edge. On a number of occasions all of Europe payed attetnion to our concerts in Budapest, and legions of critics reported the excitement of Hungarian audiences.

Since its foundation, the goal of the group has always been to present the great musical works of past and present: the band's history has been defined by personalities such as Ferenc Erkel, Ferenc Liszt, Károly Goldmark, Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvořák, Gustav Mahler and Pietro Mascagni, Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, Ernő Dohnányi, Ottorino Respighi, Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Zoltán Kodály, Leó Weiner, Pál Kadosa, Emil Petrovics, Sándor Szokolay and last but not least György Kurtág.

One of the greatest challenges for all musicians is to use their perfect musical skills to evoke emotions and vision from the "signs" of the music sheet. Following the pursuit of perfection in classicism, Romanticism emphasized the magic of music, visual sensations, and cathartic emotions, culminating in the marvelous musical paintings of Impressionism. The members of the band invite their audience to the mystical world of emotions, colors and dreams.
