El Dudas (Lajos Dudás) was born in Budapest, and now he lives at Lake Constance. The Hungarian-German jazz clarinetist is one of the few who can play contemporary jazz on this instrument that was so popular during the swing era. His repertoire ranges from Bach arrangements through mainstream to the avant-garde. He brilliantly interweaves the nuances of bebop with folk music, contemporary music and the avant-garde. The exciting, original sound of the clarinet extends from free and easy swing to the shimmering tone of improvisations. In his seminal work The Great Jazz Book Joachim-Ernst Berendt stressed the sensitivity and lightness of Dudas' free-tonal play.
Dudas and Berklee graduate guitarist Philipp van Endert gave their first concert in Düsseldorf in 1993. Tn the meantime, the project, originally planned as a one-off performance, has garnered great success and numerous album, radio and TV recordings, international tours and festival appearances for more than two decades. The duo occasionally expands to a quartet or quintet lineup. Their concerts represent an exciting dialogue for those who prefer musical adventures and are willing to leave the beaten paths of the mainstream. Dudas' rare concert in Budapest deserves particular attention.
